CADS, as the SCIA UK Partner, are proud to announce we had more entries for the UK than ever before!
In fact for the second year running, due to the increasing popularity of SCIA Engineer in the UK, CADS has been judged by SCIA as their leading International Partner.
CADS customers including AECOM, Building Design Partnership (BDP), Buxton Associates, Calcinotto and Associates, Evolve, Pell Frischmann, RVW Consulting Limited and Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP, all had entries submitted into the prestigious 300 page 2015 User Contest Book. This will provide these companies with an ideal format to promote their projects and companies globally via this widely distributed document.
The SCIA-Allplan User Contest, this year entitled "The Art of Structural Design", is a competition that is held every 2 years to showcase unique projects and innovative use of SCIA Engineer by the world's top engineers.
An independent international jury of 9 leading construction experts and academics were given the task of judging 134 projects spread globally over 4 continents. The projects were split into four main categories:-
In addition to these categories two special prizes were awarded, The BIM Prize of the Jury and the Prize of the Public. Entries were judged on originality, complexity and cutting edge use of the software.
We are delighted to announce that this year, CADS customers AECOM, Building Design Partnership and Pell Frischmann were all nominated for various categories.
Pell Frischman's entry "Blavatnik School of Government" Oxford, UK was the overall winner in the "Buildings" category.
Of the project, The jury said:
“The uniquely intricate and complex 3D circular shape of the concrete structure of the Blavatnik School in Oxford was appropriately considered in the design by using a full 3D model. Moreover, the analysis of the construction stages allowed the engineers to precisely assess the need for temporary supports and to accurately predict deflections.”
Eddie Jump, Technical Director at Pell Frischmann said “With almost every column transferred at each floor through a system of walking walls the load path at The Blavatnik School of Government is complex. To resolve this Pell Frischmann and Laing O’Rourke developed a system of temporary propping which supported the walls until such time as restraining slabs were in place. The timing of prop removal and its impact on deflection history was therefore critical to erection and programme as it affected cladding installation dates. A time history analysis of the frame was therefore critical to understanding movement and to bringing forward cladding installation and to verify the results we undertook key stage as built surveys which correlated very closely with SCIA’s output”
AECOM's entry "Serpentine Gallery Pavillion 2014" London, UK was not only the runner up in the special projects category but also picked up the "Prize of the Public".
Matt Burton, Senior Engineer with AECOM Sports, Leisure and Cities said “The Serpentine Pavilion 2014 was a great project for a great architect and we’re stoked that the structural design we undertook in Nemetschek SCIA Engineer has been recognised as both a finalist in the Special Buildings category and as the winner of the Prize of the Public in the Art of Structural Design Competition. SCIA was the ideal software for producing this unusual and innovative shape and we in AECOM Sports, Leisure and Cities are also stoked that we can now use the prize to finally replace our much loved but sadly beyond repair Table Football.”
